Implant-supported prostheses are fixed or removable prosthetic restorations placed on dental implants. These prostheses replace missing teeth, providing an aesthetically natural appearance while restoring the patient’s chewing function.
Types Supported Prostheses of Implant-
The design of implant-supported prostheses varies based on the number of implants placed, the amount of hard and soft tissue loss after tooth extraction, and the patient’s aesthetic requirements. There are two main types of implant-supported prostheses:
Fixed Implant-Supported Prostheses
This type of prosthesis is cemented or screw-retained onto the implants. The treatment can be completed in a single session using computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD-CAM) systems.
Removable Implant-Supported Prostheses
These are prostheses designed to be detachable by the patient and are placed on the implants. This option is often preferred in cases where severe bone loss limits the number of implants that can be placed.
When Are Implant-Supported Prostheses Used?
- In completely edentulous patients
- In patients with partial tooth loss
- In cases of severe physical and chemical tooth wear
- In implants requiring a superstructure
Advantages of Implant-Supported Prostheses
- Unlike traditional dentures, implant-supported prostheses prevent further bone resorption.
- They remain stable during chewing, unlike conventional dentures that may shift.
- Speech and pronunciation are clearer compared to traditional dentures.
- There is no need for denture adhesives.
