What is a Zirconium Crown?
Zirconium is a white, durable alloy used instead of metal infrastructure in porcelain crowns and bridges.
Due to its natural appearance, it is suitable for front teeth, while its strength makes it ideal for back teeth. As a result, zirconium crowns are widely used in aesthetic dentistry.
When is a Zirconium Crown Applied?
Zirconium crowns are preferred for:
- Replacing old, mismatched crowns,
- Treating severely discolored teeth or teeth with large fillings,
- Correcting misaligned or gapped teeth,
- Implant-supported prosthetics,
- Smile design treatments.
During the zirconium crown procedure, the tooth is slightly reduced, and a digital impression is taken using an intraoral camera. A custom-designed crown or bridge is then created and permanently bonded to the tooth or implant.
Advantages of a Zirconium Crown
✅ Biocompatible: Ideal for patients with metal allergies.
✅ Natural appearance: High light transmission provides an aesthetic look.
✅ Gum-friendly: Prevents the dark discoloration often seen with metal-based porcelain crowns.
